The Massachusetts Veterans’ Bonus Division marked its 106th anniversary on July 15, 2025, celebrating a proud legacy of recognizing the service and sacrifice of veterans through direct financial bonuses.
The office first opened its doors on July 15, 1919, following the enactment of Chapter 283 of the Acts of 1919, which authorized a $100 gratitude payment to Massachusetts veterans who served in World War I. In just the first two days, over 41,000 applications were received by a staff of 50. By August 15, 1919, the first 7,000 checks were issued, and by the end of that year, more than 165,000 applications had been processed and $16.5 million awarded. The staff grew to 191, nearly all of whom were veterans themselves.
Over the past century, the Division has enacted seven additional bonus programs for veterans of major wars and conflicts. Under the leadership of State Treasurer Deborah B. Goldberg, three new bonuses have been introduced, resulting in nearly $4 million awarded to veterans and families who were previously ineligible or would have received lesser amounts.
“Massachusetts has led the nation in recognizing veterans since 1919,” said State Treasurer Deborah B. Goldberg. “The Veterans’ Bonus Division reflects our state’s commitment to honoring military service, not just in words, but in meaningful support.”
“For 106 years, Massachusetts has honored its veterans with the state’s wartime bonus. The bonus is more than a benefit, it is a tradition across generations, a symbol of the deep respect and gratitude our state holds for those who serve our country,” said Steven Croteau, the Veterans’ Bonus Division Executive Director. “Every veteran’s service tells a story of courage, sacrifice, and commitment. And through this enduring tradition, we tell them: Your service matters, and it will not be forgotten.”
Since 2006, the Division has disbursed more than $41.3 million in wartime bonuses to post-9/11 veterans and those who missed bonuses at discharge.
