Twenty-three (23) members of the 46th Basic Training Academy were formally sworn-in as correction officers with the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office (MSO) during a ceremony held Friday, November 4, 2022.

The newest members of the MSO took the oath at Melrose’s Memorial Hall surrounded by family, friends, colleagues and dignitaries.

“We are tremendously proud to welcome this class of new officers to the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office,” said Sheriff Peter J. Koutoujian. “Each day, members of our office work to make our communities better, safer and healthier places to live and work. These 23 new officers will help our incredibly dedicated team meet our critical public safety mission, while continuing to grow our reputation as an innovative, national leader in the field of corrections.”

In addition to Sheriff Koutoujian, graduates also heard powerful remarks from former Boston Police Commissioner – and former Massachusetts Secretary of Public Safety – Kathleen O’Toole, as well as Melrose Mayor Paul A. Brodeur.

Those who graduated this month successfully completed 10 weeks of classroom and practical training on items ranging from policy and procedure to de-escalation, interpersonal communications and defensive tactics. They also received a full day of instruction focused on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and the impact of trauma through the Roca Impact Institute. Additionally, recruits participated in on-the-job training at the Middlesex Jail & House of Correction.

With the completion of the 46th BTA, the MSO is already preparing for the 47th BTA to start in December and accepting applications for the 48th BTA – set to begin in the Spring of 2023. Individuals interested in registering to take one of the MSO’s weekly entrance exams may do so by visiting www.middlesexsheriff.org/recruitment.

Those who pass the written exam may be eligible to become temporary officers prior to the start of the 48th BTA.

Starting base salary for new officers is $60,885 with the ability to earn over $10,000 more in potential bonuses and overtime. Candidates who successfully graduate the Basic Training Academy will also be eligible for a $2,500 sign on bonus.
