Hopkinton Boys and Girls Soccer both captured wins in the State Quarterfinals on Saturday.
The #8 seeded Hiller Boys captured a 2-1 win over a talented, battle-tested #1 seeded Bedford at Bedford High School in their noon-time game and the #3 seeded Hiller Girls captured a 1-0 win over a very-talented, powerhouse #6 seeded Franklin Panthers team.
In the #8 Hiller Boys 2-1 win on the road over #1 Bedford, Tim Zakharov netted a goal approximately 9 minutes into the game to put the Hillers up 1-0, Bedford tied it up toward the end of the 1st half at 1 a piece. Jan Antvelink untied the game with less than 5 minutes left in regulation and the Hillers would hang on for the 2-1 win. It was the 2nd straight season, the Hillers defeated Bedford in the playoffs, last year they defeated Bedford 4-3 in the State Semi-Finals. The Hiller Boys next take on #5 seeded Wakefield in the State Semi-Finals on a date and at a location TBD.
In the #3 Hiller Girls 1-0 win over #6 Franklin, Johanna DuPont netted the only goal of the game after a tremendous pass from Madison Recupero with 11:32 left in the 1st half. Sophomore Goaltender, Aila Chase was terrific in net and made several key saves while the tremendous defensive effort of Alex Clarke, Juliana Grontzos, Laura Mosher and Ashley McCann helped the Hillers hang on to the shutout win. It was a complete team effort and a game that left little room for error and the starting 11 was beyond exceptional for the Hillers. #3 Hiller Girls next take on the winner of #7 Acton-Boxborough and #2 Bishop Feehan in the State Semi-Finals on a date and at a location TBD.
This is the 1st time in recent history the Hiller Boys and Girls both advanced to the State Semi-Finals in the same season.
