Legislature Passes Balanced Budget for Fiscal Year 2013

On Thursday, the Legislature passed a $32.5 billion state budget for fiscal year 2013 (FY13). The spending plan prioritizes funding for cities and towns and commitments to reform and job creation. The budget does not contain any new taxes and uses a combination of ongoing revenue initiatives, one-time resources, and spending reductions and cuts to close a $1.4 billion budget gap, the smallest budget gap the state has had since FY08.

Fred T. Hoskins, 62

Fred T. Hoskins, 62, died Wednesday June 27, 2012 at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston after a courageous battle with cancer. He was the husband of Diane M. Hayward, to whom he was married for 25 years. Born in Manhattan, NY, he was the son of Fred Hoskins and the late Dorothy (McBurnie) Hoskins.

Fred received his bachelors degree in accounting from Adelphi University and his law degree from Suffolk University. He was employed by Northeastern University as Senior Director of Central Cooperative Education Services.

Hopkinton Ranks 4th in Central Mass Best Communities

Hopkinton ranked 4th in the Central MA's Best Communities 2012 round-up completed by GoLocalWorcester.com, a new local news website based in Worcester. According to their email notification they spent "hundreds of hours researching and evaluating all of the towns in Massachusetts, and Hopkinton placed 4th out of the 72 Central MA communities".

Concerts on the Common: Corvairs

From the 50's to the 90's, the Corvairs cover it all this Sunday, July 1st at 5PM on the Town Common.

The Corvairs are:

Bob Lynch - guitar and vocals
Ilene Corvini - drums and vocals
Patrick Dreier - keyboards, guitar and vocals
Steve Dubois - bass and vocals

"Join us for classic rock tunes from the 50’s to the 90’s at the Hopkinton Summer Concerts on the common, with the Corvairs," said Selectman Michelle Gates. "Hope to see you at 5:00!"

"Solar 201" Tonight at Senior Center

SolarFlair Energy Inc., the Solarize Mass installer for Hopkinton, will present "Solar 201" , a public meeting for residents and business owners, on Thursday, June 28 at 7PM at the Hopkinton Senior Center. SolarFlair Energy Inc. will work with Andy Boyce of the Hopkinton Sustainable Green Committee, the Solarize Mass Community Solar Coach, to implement the program in partnership with MassCEC. Contracts must be signed by September 30th at which time the final pricing is locked for everyone based on the number of watts contracted.

Hopkinton Receives $156,792 Green Communities Grant

Town Manager Norman Khumalo announced today in a press release that Hopkinton has received a grant in the amount of $156,792 from the Department of Energy Resources Green Communities Grant program. The money will go towards the Town Hall and Elmwood School energy management systems, with $71,539 being applied to the Town Hall system and the remaining $82,253 going to fund improvements in the Elmwood School energy management system.

Sunset Jazz Series Begins on June 30

The Hopkinton Center for the Arts is pleased to announce that its Sunset Jazz Series will resume on June 30 and run through August 18 at the HCA Amphitheater at 98 Hayden Rowe Street. Each Saturday night (with the exception of August 4,) a different jazz group will play from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., with rain dates on Sunday. Admission is free and all age groups are welcome. More information is available at www.caahop.org. The Sunset Jazz series is made possible in part by a grant from Hopkinton's Local Cultural Council.
