HCAM News Visits the Fire Station Open House

By Stephanie Kane, News Producer

A little rain didn't dampen the spirit of those eager to learn about fire safety during the Hopkinton Fire Department's Open House on October 6th. The goal of the event, which takes place annually during National Fire Prevention Week, is to give community members of all ages a chance to meet the firefighters, interact with the fire safety equipment, and to ask questions.

This year's National Fire Prevention Week theme focused on how to avoid kitchen fires, the most common place for a house fire to start. To educate those about this topic, the department set up a demonstration about potential kitchen hazards and how they can be fixed.

Other demonstrations and activities included an appearance by Sparky the Fire Dog, fire truck rides, getting to play inside a fire truck, setting a fire to show how fast it can spread, taking a ride on a stretcher, and using a fire extinguisher to put out a house fire.
