In 2001, the United Nations established September 21st as a global day of peace due in part to the efforts of the organization Peace One Day. Inspired by the organization's dedication towards fostering global unity, Hopkinton residents Robin Batchelder and Donna Blackstone helped establish a town-wide Peace Day celebration in 2011. And as a way to launch this year's celebration, patrons at the library were asked to help make a chain of 1,000 origami cranes, a tradition that started as a way to honor a young Japanese girl stricken with leukemia shortly after the bombing of Hiroshima. The chain created at the library will be donated to a still to be determined organization as a symbol of peace.
The Peace Day celebration continues Friday, September 20th at 7pm at the library and will feature music by Hopkinton singer and songwriter Amanda Maffei as well as a screening of the Peace One Day film, "The Day After Peace".

"Peace Day" is a day for individuals everywhere to become involved in the peace process as well as a day that provides a window of opportunity for aid agencies to carry out lifesaving work.
