Continuing a commitment to provide economic relief for businesses across the Commonwealth, Senator Karen Spilka (D-Ashland) announced Senate passage of a bill that freezes the unemployment insurance premiums paid by businesses. Without the freeze, the rate would increase by approximately $220 per employee, with the average business seeing payments jump from $715 to $935 for each worker.
The Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development reported today that the total unemployment rate was 6.8 percent, down 0.2 of a percentage point from the November rate of 7.0 percent, and well below the national rate of 8.5 percent. It is the lowest monthly rate since December of 2008. The preliminary December estimates show a decrease of 6,200 jobs in Massachusetts, for a total of 3,234,500 jobs.
The winner of the 300th Anniversary logo contest was announced by the 300th Anniversary Celebration Committee at their meeting last night and the winner is Kris Waldman, Executive Director of the Cultural Arts Alliance. According to committee chair Anne Mattina, there were a total of twelve entries and five judges from the community who were not committee members.

Representative Carolyn C. Dykema and Senator Karen E. Spilka were pleased to host the Hopkinton Hillers Girls Lacrosse team at the State House on January 4th to celebrate their 2011 Girls Lacrosse Division II State Championship.
The athletes were recognized for their achievements by both the House and Senate chambers and received citations to commemorate their remarkable season.

Hillers fall one goal short again. Hopkinton took on neighbor Milford last night at the Navin arena. The Hawks got on the board first with a goal that went in with the net about 6" off the moorings. Unfortunately it was unnoticed by the referees and the goal was allowed to stand.
Freshman Matt Decina picked up his first varsity goal on the powerplay with a great shot from the point, assisted by brother Mike. Milford was able to get the game winner on a deflection in from of Billy Elder. The Hillers visit Bellingham on Saturday night.

Robert J. McGovern, 49, of Boylston passed away Friday, January 13, 2012. He leaves three children, Julia E., Shaun C. and Patrick W. all of Hopkinton; his mother, Joan M. (Lannan) McGovern of Boylston; four siblings, Mary L. McDonald and her husband Thomas D. of Hudson, Ann M. Guerard and her companion Paul Dansereau of Charlton, Brian F. McGovern and his wife Ellen J. of Shrewsbury and Maureen F. Sawyer and her husband Robert of Hudson; 14 nieces and nephews and 3 grand nieces and 2 grand nephews. A brother, William F. McGovern, III and a sister, Ellen M. McGovern predeceased him.
In accordance with Section 2 of the Hopkinton Marathon Policy, the Board of Selectmen will distribute invitational applications for the upcoming 2012 Boston Marathon in the following manner:
The BAA has provided the Town of Hopkinton with 45 invitational applications for the 2012 race. Of those 45 invitational applications, 14 will be distributed directly to the Hopkinton Police Department; four will be distributed to the Hopkinton Fire Department; five to the Marathon Committee; four to the Senior Center; and one to the Hopkinton Historical Society.
On Saturday, January 21st at 10:30 a.m., HCAM Studios will host the first Wake Up and Smell the Poetry program of the new year with Boston poet Dan Tobin, Boston Storyteller Karen Given and Metrowest duo, Carrie Rowan and Adrienne Fawkes. Tobin is author of six books of poetry, is also recipient of "The Discover/The Nation Award", "The Robert Penn Warren Award", The Robert Frost Fellowship, The Katherine Bakeless Nason Prize and creative writing fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation.
