On April 5, 2020, at approximately 9:00 pm the Hopkinton Police Department was contacted by the Burrillville Police Department in Rhode Island, in reference to an outstanding arrest warrant for a Mr. Carlos Ortiz of 47 Pine St. Woonsocket, RI. Mr. Ortiz was wanted for a 2011 home invasion that occurred in Hopkinton.

The Burrillville Police Department confirmed the arrest warrant and placed Mr. Ortiz in custody. He was subsequently transported to the Adult Correctional Facility in Cranston, RI where he was held as a fugitive from justice.

Mr. Ortiz was identified as one of three men who entered a home on Lincoln St. in Hopkinton and committed a home invasion in 2011. Through a lengthy investigation and tireless efforts by Sgt. Timothy Brennan, the Franklin Police Department, Massachusetts State Police, and the FBI, Mr. Ortiz and two others were indicted in the Middlesex Superior Court after a Grand Jury hearing in 2012.

He was charged with:

Chap. 274 sec. 7 Conspiracy to commit Home Invasion

Chap. 265 sec. 18C Home Invasion

In 2016 an arrest warrant was issued where he was subsequently arrested on April 5, 2020. The other two defendants in the case were arrested and convicted in 2016.

Mr. Ortiz waived his rights to extradition and was transported to the Hopkinton Police Department on April 9, 2020. A video conference arraignment was held at the police station and Mr. Ortiz was ordered held without bail and transferred to the Billerica House of Corrections.

Chief Bennett stated that “this case is an example of multi-agency/multi-jurisdictional collaboration. Thank you to all who helped us solve this crime and get this violent fugitive off the streets.”
