February 22, 2016 -- (Hopkinton, MA) – Brown Dog Coalition is proud to announce that it will begin doing direct adoptions starting on March 15, 2016. Brown Dog Coalition is a foster-based rescue with headquarters in Hopkinton, Mass. In addition to its primary mission of transporting and rehoming dogs from Jamaica, Brown Dog will also be rehoming dogs and cats from Massachusetts and other U.S. locations.

"Brown Dog Coalition has always been about rescuing without borders,” said Brown Dogs’ president, Naomi Covino. “We don't consider one dog more worthy of a good home than another, especially based on where they come from in the world. Some Caribbean islands have communities that help dogs get adopted, and we hope to add Jamaica to that group. “Working with a local shelter, Brown Dog Coalition has successfully rehomed over 100 dogs and five cats since its inception two years ago. Jamaica’s Montego Bay Animal Haven rescues local animals, and with the help of Brown Dog Coalition, dogs and cats are evaluated for temperament and suitability for adoption. Once candidates pass the evaluation, they are vaccinated, spayed or neutered, and examined by three veterinarians before they are authorized to travel to the U.S. Once in Massachusetts, they are quarantined for 48 hours, and examined by a veterinarian again before they are available for adoption.

Given the enthusiastic welcome from adopters in Massachusetts, Brown Dog will begin direct adoptions and is looking forward to finding forever homes for even more deserving animals. “It's hard to avoid seeing the plight of Jamaican dogs while you're on the island,” Covino said. “The scale and severity of the problem was too big for me to ignore, especially knowing I had access to a wonderful community in Massachusetts with a high adoption rate. I believe this community can help not only Jamaica, but other locations around the world.”
