Doris Catherine Kumlin, 82

Doris Catherine Kumlin, 82, of Hopkinton, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Sunday, October 30, 2016. Born in Westfield, NJ, she was the daughter of the late Alice (Briant) and Walter Nelson. Doris was married for 51 years to the late Richard M. “Cook” Kumlin.

Doris was a standout athlete during her time at Hopkinton High School (“Stedgie Prep”). She was a pre-school teacher at Marion Clover’s Twin Spruce Kindergarten School in the 1960’s and later worked for over 25 years at the Hopkinton Public Library. As the Children’s Librarian, she worked tirelessly to transform the Children’s Room into a warm, welcoming place. She added child sized furnishings, started weekly story hours, put on puppet shows and organized summer reading programs, all to share her love of reading with the children. As a founding member of the Friends of the Library and member of the Library Board of Trustees, she volunteered countless hours fundraising for the library. Active in her children’s activities, she was a Cub Scout Den Mother and a Girl Scout leader. Doris was well known as a talented seamstress, making anything from home décor to wedding gowns.

She is survived by her children, David Kumlin and his wife Tammy Hopkins of Lunenburg, Susan Hill and her husband Charlie of Uxbridge, Janice Harriman and her husband Robert of Milford; her two siblings, Bernhart Nelson and his wife Joanne of Lebanon, NJ, and Nancy Heines of Tequesta, FL. She also leaves behind five beloved grandchildren, Corina, Rheanna, Charles, Catherine, and Ava; as well as many nieces and nephews.
