Help Your Student Study for Tests

Quizzes. AP exams. Driver’s license tests. High school students take a lot of tests. Here are some ways you can help your student study:
~Make sure your student knows the format of the test (multiple choice? essay?) and what will be covered. Your student should ask the teacher (and then write down) whether the test is only on Chapter 6 or whether it will also cover Chapter 7.
~Make sure your student has everything she needs before she starts to study. If she's studying for a math test, for example, she needs to be able to find her old homework sheets and quizzes.
~Help your student make a schedule. She should set aside some study time for several days before the test. Don't let your teen get in the habit of "cramming" the night before the test. Students learn and remember more if they break up their studying into several chunks.
~Have your student think about what the teacher might ask. One of the best ways for your teen to study for a test is by trying to write some questions. Then she can think about the answers to those questions. Chances are, some of those will show up on the test. Your student will feel more confident if she's thought about the answers ahead of time.
