Dear Parent or Guardian,

As you know, many special events are coming up for you and your child, such as Prom and Graduation. If you plan on hosting a party to celebrate these events, please be aware of the Massachusetts Social Host Law.

This law indicates that whoever furnishes alcohol for a person under 21 years of age shall be punished by;

-Fine of up to $2,000
-Imprisonment for up to a year
-Or both

“Furnish” shall mean to knowingly or intentionally ;

-To supply, give, or provide
-To allow minors to possess alcoholic beverages on the premises or the property owned, or controlled by, the person charged.

Also, please note that if your child holds a party with alcohol present without your knowledge, you may still be liable for the underage drinkers and can be subject to the consequences above.

Please understand these consequences are to encourage you and your child to attend safe events where he or she is in no danger of illegal substances. If your child runs into a situation where alcohol or drugs arrives at a party or gathering make sure they have an escape plan. Tell your child to call you, and you will meet them down the street in a safe area from the party. That way, they have removed themselves from the problem and can't, and won't be charged for Constructive Possession.

We wish you a happy and safe rest of the year,

Thanks,
Hopkinton High School Peer Leaders
