Hillers Girls Basketball Advances in Playoffs with Win Over Medway

Hopkinton Hillers Girls Basketball defeated the Medway Mustangs for the 4th time this season, 55-43. The Hillers took on and defeated the Mustangs in their 2 regular season meetings and also ended up knocking them out of the Westborough holiday tournament and playoffs.

The first quarter was a physical defensive quarter. Ivy Gogolin hit 4 times from the floor to help the Hillers outscore the Mustangs 12-8. The 2nd quarter was more physical defensive play from both teams. The Mustangs took advantage of Hillers foul trouble and tallied 6 points off of free throws in a 10-10 quarter. The Hillers led at the half 22-18.

The Hopkinton offense lit up the scoreboard in the 3rd quarter, Julia Canestrari drained a pair from 3-point land and Captains, Mikayla Pucci and Ivy Gogolin each hit for a pair of 2’s. Hopkinton outscored Medway in the 3rd 17-8. Medway tied up the game at 22 early in the 3rd but the Hillers went on a 17-4 run to close out the quarter and led 39-26 heading to the 4th.

In the 4th quarter, the Hillers only hit for 3 field goals but tallied 9 points on free throws. The Hillers brought in the bench for about the last 2 minutes of the quarter, as it was clear they were advancing. Medway outscored Hopkinton in the 4th 17-16 but the Hillers took the victory 55-43.

The Hillers improve to 19 and 2 overall and advance to take on Marlborough Wednesday (3/8) 6pm at Worcester State University in the semi-finals. Medway ends their season 14 and 8 but has a lot to look forward to with lots of returning players next season.
