May 28, 2021, Hopkinton, Mass. – Since its inception ten years ago, Hopkinton Public Library Foundation has contributed $1 million toward the cost of the Library renovation and expansion.  In honor of its 10-year anniversary of supporting our Library, the Foundation is committing $10,000 to launch a “Library of Things” at Hopkinton Public Library.

Wildly popular at libraries across the nation, a “Library of Things” expands the boundaries of traditionally defined library materials to include physical items such as technology,  instruments, equipment, games and other objects for loan to the community. A natural expansion of the Library’s existing lending model, this new collection will offer patrons the opportunity to explore, play and learn from the “Library of Things” or try items before you buy them.

By funding a “Library of Things,” Hopkinton Public Library Foundation aims to provide the physical tools
needed to support lifelong learning and creativity, and provide new ways for kids and adults to interact and
explore. As such, the collection will greatly enhance the Library’s mission to “inspire exploration, discovery
and engagement” in our community.

Library staff are eagerly planning the initial offerings available in our “Library of Things.” If you have an idea for an item to include in this new collection, please reach out to Library Director Heather Backman at hbackman@hopkintonma.gov or keep any eye out for a community survey on the “Library of Things.” Teens have an opportunity to provide their ideas at a Tuesday, June 8th, 7 – 8 p.m., Zoom session of “Imagine Corps,” an innovation learning and community service program for Metro-West teens that teaches participants creative problem-solving and breakthrough thinking skills while giving them an opportunity to benefit a local non-profit. Interested teens and their parents can visit www.imaginecorps.org to learn more and sign up for the June 8 session.

About the Hopkinton Public Library Foundation.
Hopkinton Public Library Foundation, Inc., is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with a mission of supporting Hopkinton Public Library by funding resources, technology, educational and special projects, and long term improvements. HPLF’s fundraising efforts seek to bridge the gap between the community’s aspirations for its Library and the usual or customary funding available from municipal budgets. Working in partnership with the Library, as well as the supporting organizations of the Trustees and Friends of the Library, the Foundation encourages continued and increased support of the Hopkinton Public Library as a valuable community resource.

Thanks to the continued generosity of HPLF’s supporters, HPLF provided funding in 2020 for: a start up collection of “Lucky Day” high-demand books; the beautiful new frame for the Heritage Quilt which hangs in the lower level; a new 3D Printer and laptop for the Library (which will be made available for use at the Library in the coming months); and the fee for the consultant who steered the Library's new Strategic Plan, which will guide the Library for the next 5 years.
