According to Fire Chief Ken Clark, recent outside fires and structural fires in Hopkinton and in surrounding communities due to the improper disposal of wood stove and fire place ashes have been identified. Please review the attached recommended action item to insure the safety of your family and property.

Safety Action: Proper Disposal of Fire Place and Wood Stove Ashes

Ashes cleaned out from the fire place or wood stove should be shoveled into a metal bucket with a metal lid, placed outside, on the ground, away from any buildings, to prevent fires. Do not place ashes into a paper bag or cardboard box. Ashes and embers can remain hot for days and easily ignite combustibles.
