Steel Beams Rise from the Ground: Construction on Our New Library Continues!

This fall, construction continues on the restoration, renovation and expansion of the Hopkinton Public Library at 13 Main Street. The steel structure for the addition to our Library can now be seen rising from the newly poured foundation. Construction on the site began on April 11, 2016, and will continue until the expected opening of our new Library in late Summer 2017.

To prepare for the Library expansion, the house on the adjoining site at 9 Church Street was demolished and the site was cleared to pour the foundation for the addition. The construction of the foundation is now complete, including footing and concrete wall placements, an important milestone in the project. Steel beams rise from the foundation to frame the Library addition, and patrons are cheering the elevator shaft now visible in the form of a masonry elevator stack. (The original Library did not have an elevator and all visitors had to climb a flight of stairs to access the Children’s Room.) Utilities to service the addition are going in at the basement level, including plumbing lines, drains, and electrical conduits.

To prepare for the spectacular glass entryway off of Main Street and lobby for the new Library, CTA Construction removed the hallway connector, built in 1967, to link the original library and the church building. The interior of the original buildings are being prepared for renovation, while the repairing, restoration and repainting of the stone on the antique church and original Library are underway.

The next months will see the completion of the structural steel and the start of the building envelope for the Library expansion. The Town posts photos of the progress of the construction on a monthly basis at Hopkinton Library’s Facebook page. Photos can also be found on the Town of Hopkinton’s website under Library “Progress Photos.”

Laura Barry, chairperson of the Hopkinton Public Library Foundation (HPLF), is thrilled by the progress of the construction, and even more so by the community’s support of this important project for our Town. “Hundreds of Hopkinton families, organizations and businesses have come together to raise over $800,000 for our new Library,” said Ms. Barry. “With our goal of $1 million within reach, we invite the Hopkinton community to join 1000 Homes for Hopkinton Library, or display your family’s name on a permanent piece of our Library through a Naming Opportunity gift.” For more information about how to contribute to the restoration, renovation and expansion of Hopkinton Library, please look for a mailing from the HPLF this fall, or click here.

HPLF will continue to host its popular fundraising events during construction, including its perennially sold out Hoptoberfest on October 28, 2016, Princess Tea in March 2017, Touch-A-Truck in June 2017, and a grand celebration of the opening of our new Library in the Fall of 2017.
