Elmwood Students Prepare for Kenya Day at March Meeting of the Eagles

By Stephanie Kane, News Producer

As the Boston Marathon approaches and the Kenyan runners make their annual visit, Elmwood Elementary students have been working hard to get ready. And at their March Meeting of the Eagles, the majority of the time was devoted to preparing for that special day in April.

On Kenya Day, the students will be singing the Kenyan National Anthem, which they practiced at the meeting. They also performed a song in the native Kenyan language of Swahili called "Jambo", which means hello.

And in the spirit of the Boston Marathon, Elmwood students will be running in their own marathon. The kids will have 8 weeks to run a total of either 13.1 miles, a half marathon, or 26.2 miles, a full marathon, as part of a program called the Marathon Fitness Challenge. The program, now in its sixth year, is a partnership between the Wellness Department and the Hopkinton Running club. And last year's program participants ran a total of 12,000 miles.

For participating in the challenge, the students will get a water bottle. For running a half marathon the kids will get a t-shirt. For completing the full marathon, students will earn a medal. And the classroom that runs the most miles collectively will win a special prize.

The entire March Meeting of the Eagles will be airing on HCAM-ED, Verizon Channel 31 and Comcast Channel 96. Check the HCAM schedule for dates and times.
