Elmwood's Meeting of the Eagles

By Michelle Murdock, Freelance Writer

Students, parents and teachers gathered in the Elmwood School gym on Wednesday, November 23rd for the all school meeting known as the Meeting of the Eagles.

The meeting is a long standing tradition at Elmwood and includes song and performances that showcase what the studetns have learned, as well as school standards like the Pledge of Allegiance.

The meeting also helps to build school spirit, exemplified by the singing of the Elmwood School song. Another favorite for students is the chance to play thier recorders. According to Elmwood School Principal Ilene Silver, this was the first time the Elmwood Recorder Orchestra played together this year.

Also performing was the Elmwood Orchestra, a group of eleven students who take lessons privately, but practice at Elmwood with Music Teacher Mrs. Diamond. An audition, and the ability to play the school song, are required to gain membership.

A special performance at this month's meeting was part of a new program called Responsive Classroom, which Principal Silver explained was a social competency program being introduced initially in Grades K-5.

To honor and recognize three students whose fathers had recently served or were currently serving in the military, students sang America the Beautiful. And finally, as the singing came to an end, it was time for the students' favorite part of the meeting; the arrival of Elmwood's mascot, Swoops.

The Meeting of the Eagles ended with yet another traditional performance, the Coming and Going of the Rain, a performance that needs to be heard to be fully understood. To see highlights of the meeting, watch the HCAM News video below.
