Lottery, Awards and Recognitions at School Committee

By Stephanie Kane, News Producer

The School Committee held their regular weekly meeting on February 2nd. The first item on the agenda was the lottery for next fall's full day kindergarten program at Center School. There will be a guaranteed total of 5 classrooms filled for next year. A 6th may be added too, depending upon demand as well as budget constraints. Each child whose family signed them up for the lottery was assigned a number. Using the number generator website random.org, a number was arbitrarily given to each of the students. Out of the 134 incoming kindergarteners who were signed up for the lottery, the first 92 will be initially contacted for a spot in the program.

The list of lottery number spots is available on both the old and new versions of the Center School website.

Also at the meeting, the accomplishments of several high school students were recognized. The Robotics Team is headed to the Massachusetts State First Robotics Championship in March after placing fifth in the North Andover First Robotics Qualifier Tournament. The team hopes to make its second consecutive trip to the world championships.

Also, 52 high school students earned state level awards in the Boston Globe Scholastic Art Awards, a school record.

Out of the 52 awardees, 13 won gold keys, 13 earned silver keys, and 26 received honorable mentions. Those students who won a gold key will now have their work judged in a national competition in New York. And the 26 students who received either gold or silver keys, will have their work exhibited in Boston.

This meeting is available in its entirety on the HCAM website. The next regular meeting of the School Committee will be held on February 16th at 7:30 PM in the Middle School library. It will also be shown live on HCAM-TV on Comcast 8 and Verizon 30.
