Team Hoyt Brings "Yes You Can" Message to the Middle School

By Michelle Murdock, Freelance Writer

One of the many ways that Team Hoyt strives to educate the public about people with disabilities is through inspirational speaking engagements, and on friday February 1 the Hoyts brought their message to the 7th and 8th graders at the Hopkinton Middle School.

After watching a short film that summarized the story of Rick's birth and the challenges he faced growing up with cerebral palsy, the students listened as Dick Hoyt thanked them and talked about the Hoyts can do attidude.

The students also had the opportunity to hear from Rick directly. In a speech prepared ahead of time with the help of his computer, Rick was able to tell his story in his own words. But the highlight of the afternoon came after the formal presentation when the students asked several followup questions, getting to know the Hoyts even better.

The Middle School Running Club presented the Hoyts with t-shirts, Ms. McNally's class posed for a group photo, and several students lingered for a one on one conversation .

As the Hoyts were preparing to leave, it was evident that they were successful in getting their message across. Watch the HCAM news video for highlights of the event and to listen as students Eric Oleson and Ryan Mastroianni talk about their experience meeting Dick and Rick Hoyt.
