Video: Hopkinton Students Take Part in Marathon Wreath Ceremony

By Tom Nappi, News Director

The Consulate General of Greece was in attendance at the Boston State House to present the olive branch wreaths distributed to the Boston Marathon winners. In the highlights below, the Hopkinton Middle School chorus sung the Greek National Anthem and Hopkinton students were also awarded in the Marathon essay contest.

"The sport of Marathon-ing derived from the 26 mile run from Athenian soldiers from the battle plain of Marathon, Greece back to Athens to protect their city from the Persian Army's 2nd attack. The victory at Marathon, Greece was pivotal in the preservation of Greek civilization and their revolutionary political system of democracy."

Some Hopkinton Middle School students took home awards in the Alpha Omega Marathon Education Committee essay contest. "The committee serves to encourage appreciation of the civic responsibility and bravery ancient Greeks demonstrated at the battle of marathon."
